What is the Job all about?
Engineering has two aspects to it – the physical nature of the job and the trouble shooting aspect. Both aspects are like two sides of the same coin. In every area of specialization i.e. Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Agricultural, Bio-medical, Automobile, Aviation, Environmental, etc. there are the two aspects of the job. But depending on where you choose to work, you could have one aspect more pronounced than the other.

The country’s most prestigious Engineering Degree programs (Indian Institute of Technology –IIT) will be in 22 locations. . In the first phase we have IITs at Mumbai, Kanpur, Kharagapur, Chennai ,Delhi, Guwahati, Roorkee. In Phase 2 IIT’s are at Ropar, Bhubaneswar, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Patna, Rajasthan, Mandi, Jodhpur and Indore and Phase 3 will include Palakkal in Kerala, Tirupati in AP, Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, Chattisgarh & Karnataka.

Can you go for it?
Engineers need to be strong in Maths, Physics and Chemistry. They are required to be able to carefully analyse the problem and find solutions. A person with a calm disposition and leadership qualities, will be able to push his team to stick to deadlines and achieve them.

You will have to decide, based on your personal preferences and the job market, as to which branch of Engineering you wish to specialise in. Currently the scene in Information Technology, Electronics, Tele-communications and Civil Engineering looks very good.

ComputerEngineering/Information Technology involves designing, manufacture, and maintenance of computer hardware and computer based information and control systems. Information Technology on the other hand is the development of Software for various applications, be it in Research Institutions tracking down DNA or an Aircraft or Space Aircraft, etc.

Electronic Engineering is about electronic components, integrated circuits and microprocessors. This involves design, fabrication, testing, maintenance and supervision of the manufacture of electronic equipment.

Civil Engineering is concerned with planning, investigation, survey, design, supervision, basically all kinds of work connected with construction.

Mechanical Engineering extends across many inter-disciplinary interdependent specialities. It is concerned with design, operation and maintenance of machines, their components, machine tools, manufacturing systems and processes, solar energy, air conditioning and refrigeration and industrial engineering.

Electrical Engineering is concerned with the generation, distribution and use of electrical power, control and instrumentation. They work with equipment that produces and distributes electricity, such as generators, transmission lines, transformers, lighting and wiring in buildings.

Aviation Engineering encompasses the fields of aeronautical and astronautically (spacecraft) engineering. Aerospace engineers are concerned with the design, analysis, construction, development, testing and manufacture of commercial and military aircraft, missiles and spacecraft. Linked to this is Licensed Engineering which basically deals with Repair and Maintenance of Aircraft.

Agricultural Engineering deals with design and developments of farm implements and machineries, production, processing, transportation and storage of agricultural commodities. Service Engineers are engaged in sale servicing, repairing and installation of farm machinery.

Automobile Engineering is concerned with the design, development, repair and manufacture of automobiles. It may also specialise in automobile design.

Bio-medical Engineering uses the principles of engineering and life sciences and conduct research on the biological aspects of human and animal life. Some examples are, the artificial heart and other artificial organs, prosthetics (artificial limbs), use of lasers in surgery, cryosurgery, the use of computers in diagnosis, etc.

ChemicalEngineering applies the principles of chemistry and engineering to solve problems in production of chemicals.

Environmental Engineering concerns itself with the task of protecting the quality of the environment – air, water and land. This field embraces a wide field, from the ocean depths where marine resources must be preserved, to the depletion of ozone layers in the upper atmosphere, which poses a threat to life on earth.

Nuclear Engineering: Nuclear engineers work to harness the energy released from nuclear reactions. Their field, nuclear engineering, deals with the application of nuclear energy in a variety of settings, including nuclear power plants, submarine propulsion systems, medical diagnostic equipment such as MRI machines, food production, nuclear weapons and radioactive-waste disposal facilities.

Is there a future in this field?
The physical type of Engineer will be on site with his team, be it Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, etc. He will be required to face problems on the spot and on many occasions give instructions on the spot. Whereas the man in the Engineering Office will be a trouble shooter, who will weigh each aspect of the problem, go through the original drawings specifications, calculations, approvals, manuals, and check to see if there has been any discrepancy between the plans and the reality. If there are no problems, then he will look at whether there has been any error in the original plans, or if it was just not rightly conceived; and then start finding solutions to the problems.

Information technology Engineers primarily are Development and Software experts, so they are largely engaged in Research and Development; and troubleshooting after the Programs have been developed.

Employment avenues
It would be safe to say that there would be no Industrial undertaking without engineers. We are blessed with many both in the private and public sector – so there are abundant opportunities for Engineers in our country.

Money
At the B.E. level the starting salary offers are around Rs. 7,500/- p.m. But with experience and talent, the salary keeps going higher and higher; and can even reach around Rs. 25,000/- to Rs. 50,000/- p.m. Of course those with an MBA attached to their B.E. degree, can command salaries ranging from Rs. 50,000/- p.m. to Rs. 3 – 4 lakhs p.m.

Please do not be satisfied with just acquiring a Degree/Diploma – try and enhance your CV by doing online learning programs (with a certificate) of programs relevant to your choice of career. Your chances of employment will be much better than just a plain degree/diploma.

Please check this website under other details for places you can learn online. Also try and develop your confidence by doing a public speaking training program with people like Toast Masters International.
