Making a video game takes a whole team of people. Everyone, from the director down to the testers, plays a vital role in turning out a quality product. There are coders, artist, voice actors, and a slew of other people, all working together towards a common goal of putting a quality video game into the market, and achieving success in both critical acclaim, and sales.
However, with most video games there is one person who leads the development. Their ideas are what pushes everything forward, and their leadership and motivation are what keeps a team together and moving towards their common goals.
Making a list of influential people in video games without including Miyamoto would be a travesty against gaming, and really, a travesty against humanity. One could easily make the argument that he is largely responsible for video games, at least as we know them today. After all, he is the man responsible for Mario, the highest selling video game franchise in history.
Not only did Mr. Miyamoto bring us Mario, which would be enough of an accomplishment by itself, but he is also the visionary responsible for Zelda. The Legend of Zelda was the game that took role-playing games and made them popular. Before Zelda, RPGs were a very niche genre, but after Link started running around hacking bad guys to bits, they became much more popular.
What is the job all about?
The Gaming Industry has grown a lot since the mid-70s. Today it makes 80 Billion Dollars a year with an 8.6% employment growth rate.
Games to-day have a massive audience .Games are directly connected to our phones, PCs, and tablets. It is possible even for a for a small group to create new Games to entertain varied age groups.
Although the Indian market is slowly catching up with Gaming, the major countries to control the market today are the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, China, Korea, Germany and Canada.
Can I go for it?
A Video Game Developer / Designer writes and debugs codes to develop games for different platforms. He determines the design and basic concept of the game as well as the story and sketch of how the game will look like. He also maintains a process of the activities; every game is tested and redesigned until all the flaws are eliminated. Video Game Designing involves a big group of creative and logical team. This team includes: Programmer, Writer, Audio Programmer, Level Designer, Animator, and Software Engineers.
Is there a future in this field?
There is no easy path to get into the gaming industry, it’s a world full of hardcore and professional gamers coming together to make better and bigger games for everyone. The International Gaming Industry is exploding, but the Indian market is catching up gradually, from 2007 at its start with revenue of 4 Billion Rupees to 28 Billion Rupees in just 8 years. It only shows a promising future for all the creative and die-hard gamers to pursue a career in the Gaming industry, not just for the titans (PC, XBOX and PlayStation), but also the mobile and tablet industry.
Where do I start?
Most employers prefer a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering. Couple of years with programming experience is recommended. With a Master’s Degree in Computer Science one has a better standing. And most important in this industry is the love for Video Games.
