Event Management

IKON

Francisco Martins is a renowned event manager, visualizer, and choreographer known for his exceptional contributions to pageantry and cultural presentations. Over the years, he won first prize at Goa’s Annual Republic Day Parade four times (1981, 1988, 1991, and 2000) and took second prize on three occasions (1989, 1990, and 1995), where he brilliantly showcased Goa’s vibrant culture. In 1974, he also won first prize for the best Carnival float. At the 2004 International Film Festival of India, his spectacular work with four themed floats and a 200-dancer ensemble again secured first prize, offering audiences a vivid display of Goa’s diverse cultural heritage.

Often called the “King of Pageantry,” Martins was held in high regard by Rajiv Gandhi. His eyes light up when recalling the Nehru birth centenary celebration, where he orchestrated a show involving 1,300 schoolgirls from Goa, along with 35,000 other participants from across India, in collaboration with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT).

Goa’s five-star hotels frequently seek his expertise for event décor, and he is a preferred choice for elaborate wedding decor. A few years ago, he directed the ongoing sound-and-light spectacle Pilgrimage of the Heart near Bom Jesus, which depicts the life of Christ, the apostles, and St. Francis Xavier, or “Goencho Sahib.” With 80 life-size statues, Martins skillfully brings the story to life, orchestrating them with the finesse of a master puppeteer.

What is the Job all about?
Event management involves organizing and coordinating a wide range of events, from small gatherings like parties and weddings to large-scale events such as corporate conferences, government functions, and international expos. High-level events can include global conferences, sporting events like the Commonwealth Games or Olympics, international trade shows, film festivals, and prestigious pageants such as Miss Universe. Religious events, like the Expositions of St. Francis Xavier or prominent temple darshans, also fall under this field. The job requires understanding the unique needs of each event and planning every detail to ensure a seamless, successful experience within the agreed-upon budget.

Can you go for it?

An event manager oversees both planning and execution. This role requires expertise in creative, technical, and logistical aspects of events, including event design, audio-visual production, scriptwriting, logistics, budgeting, negotiation, and client services. You’ll be responsible for coordinating hotels, food, entertainment, and more, ensuring guests and delegates have a memorable experience. Strong organizational, networking, and communication skills are essential, as is the ability to meet strict deadlines and manage within budgets.

Events require proficiency across multiple areas, so knowledge of event-related skills can be beneficial. Familiarity with DJing, public speaking, and sound and lighting systems, as well as technical skills in PowerPoint, animation, graphics, choreography, photography, and videography, are all valuable. Consider joining public speaking clubs like Toastmasters, available in Goa, Mumbai, and Pune, to enhance your skills.

Is there a future in this field?
Absolutely. Events are here to stay. As India’s international profile continues to grow, the demand for large-scale events will only increase. Skilled event managers who can deliver high-quality experiences are essential to meet this growing need.
