IKONS
Perhaps a bit of background will inspire you to consider high-ranking roles in the police force. Did you know that two Goans have held very senior positions in the police? Julio Rebello, often called the “Super Cop,” and John Lobo both served with distinction. Mr. Rebello even became an Ambassador for our country, while Mr. Lobo was once tasked with ensuring the safety of Prime Minister Morarji Desai. Both were IPS officers (Indian Police Service, equivalent to the IAS and IFS cadres).
What is the job all about?
For a career in the IPS (Indian Police Service), you need to be both tough and compassionate, depending on the demands of each situation. Quick decisions are often required in delicate and complex scenarios, so it’s essential to remain unbiased and avoid influences such as favoritism and political ideologies.
Inspector General of Police Route (IPS)
• During the probation period, you will undergo a year of on-the-job training in the office of a Superintendent of Police in the district where you have been allocated. Upon completing your two-year probation, you will be confirmed as a three-star Assistant Superintendent of Police (A.S.P.). Promotions continue from there to the position of Deputy Inspector General of a Range (a group of districts).
• In cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore, law and order duties are the exclusive responsibility of the police force. In these cities, the A.S.P., S.P., and DIG are referred to as Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), and Commissioner of Police (CP), respectively.
• The senior positions in the IPS include Deputy Inspector General, Inspector General, Additional Director General, and Director General. There is only one Director General of Police (D.G.) who heads the police force of the State.
The IPS cadre (All India) holds ranks such as Director General of Police, IGP, Dy. IGP, etc.
If you pass the State Police Service Exam, you can become a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).
If you are a graduate (in any branch), you can join as an Assistant Inspector of Police, and with subsequent promotions, you can become an Inspector of Police.
There are various areas of responsibility:
• CID (Criminal Investigation Department): CID performs specialized intelligence functions and has political, labor, youth & student, communal administrative, and miscellaneous wings.
• Crime Branch: This branch investigates significant cases that require scientific and specialized assistance. It includes a scientific aids unit, a dog squad, and a research unit. The Dog Unit assists in tracking narcotics, explosives, and criminals.
• Anti-Corruption Branch: This branch handles cases of corruption, while the Anti-Narcotics Cell controls the spread of narcotics in Goa.
• Security Unit: Responsible for VIP security.
