Visual Communication

What is the Job all about?

Visual Communication (VISCOM) covers a broad spectrum of disciplines, including writing, journalism, photography, art appreciation, scriptwriting, drawing, media research, computer graphics, and animation. With these skills, a qualified professional can pursue careers in advertising (both press and TV), filmmaking, copywriting, graphic design, photojournalism, and animation.

A visual communication professional transforms concepts into reality using technical methods like 3D or 2D modeling, images, graphics, or symbols. These ideas are then brought to life for the target audience using digital imaging skills and software tools to enhance visual appeal.

A course in visual communication is a creative process that merges art and technology to effectively convey ideas and information. Visual designers work with various media and tools to communicate messages to an audience.

It’s essential not to confuse visual communication with graphic design, which is a more specialized field. In visual communication, you learn a wider range of skills, including graphic design, illustration, animation, photography, and techniques like photo modification or airbrushing to better convey a message. Career paths in visual communication include graphic design, professional photography or retouching, illustration, animation, advertising, website design, and roles in visual marketing. Concentrations in this field may include digital animation, professional digital photography, computer illustration, mixed visual media, and advertising.

The key distinction between graphic design and visual communication is that graphic design is a more focused discipline primarily concerned with creating key graphics for broader advertising campaigns, websites, or print materials.
