IKON

Amul girl refers to the advertising mascot used by Amul, an Indian dairy brand. The Amul girl is a hand-drawn cartoon of a young Indian girl dressed in a polka dotted frockwith blue hair and a half pony tied up.The Amul girl advertising have often been described as one of the best Indian Advertising concepts because of their humour.

The Amul girl was created as a response to Amul’s rival brand Polson’s butter-girl. The idea was conceived in 1967 by art director Eustace Fernandez on hoardings, painted bus panels and posters in Mumbai. The mascot, since then, has been mobilized to comment on many events of national and political importance. Incidentally the Cover jacket of the first two editions of this book were also designed by Eustace.

What is this Job all about?
Advertising is all about communicating about Products and Services to the relevant consumer. The Media used is TV, Radio, Newspapers, Billboards, Internet, Posters, etc. There are several aspects to Advertising. There is the Client servicing – where the Advertising Agency tries to understand the needs of the Client. Then there is the Accounts planning where the Agency creates a plan based on the Budget and the Media to be used. The Creative Department then takes over. Here there is the Copywriter, who produces the jingles (creative messages/music that will register with the consumer and convince him to buy the product). The Graphic Artist matches the jingle with a photograph or design to match the jingle.

Can I go for it?
If you are creative and have an imagination that can come out with a Message/Design that is catchy and sells the Product – then you ought to be in Advertising.

You need to be good in Art/Photography, or coining jingles, as also strong in relevant Computer software. If however you prefer to be in the Accounts planning, then you need to have an MBA in Marketing/Advertising.

Is there a future in this field?
There is tremendous competition among Service Providers e.g. Mobiles – There are so many types of Mobile phones with a myriad facilities/prices that if one does not advertise the Product -the Consumer will not be aware of the particular product a Manufacturer has, and whether it has a competitive advantage. So, advertising has become compulsory. Similar is the case with Cars/TVs, Scooters, Household appliances, etc.
