What is the Job all about?
Basically, everyone wants to look her / his best and it is the job of the Beautician to achieve that for their customer. Among the areas you would be involved with in the Beautician program are, hairstyling, make-up, hair removal, facials, manicure, pedicure, electrolysis, herbal care, massage, aroma-therapy, product sale, etc.

Facial experts: The person is trained to understand and treat skin problems like acne, dark patches, or premature wrinkles and providing treatment based on skin type and overall condition.

Hair care: Skills in cutting, colouring, straightening, perming and styling hair.

Electrologist: Is a person trained in the permanent removal of superfluous hair and needs to be technically adept at handling laser equipment.

Cosmetic Sales Person: This person requires excellent knowledge of grooming, skin, and hair and nail care, in addition to detailed knowledge of the products they promote. Amway, Aviance, Avon, Oriflame recruit a large and growing network of women for direct selling of their line of popular cosmetics and beauty aids on part time basis.

Adviser to manufacturing Companies: This is the deep end of the business, and naturally, many talents are called for. The B.Sc. degree gives an in-depth knowledge of the chemistry of the skin, and the influences of make up on types of skins. Not all perfumes, lipsticks and creams suit all skins and all weather conditions.

 

Can you go for it?
If you like facial / hair management including skills in cutting, colouring and styling hair then this would be an ideal Career choice. If you are prepared to study further, you could do your B.Sc. in Cosmetology offered by Nagpur University. In this situation, you could be an Adviser to Manufacturers of Cosmetic Products in terms of effects of certain chemicals / creams on people with delicate skin compositions.

You need to have pleasing personality, always well-groomed and gentle dexterity. The person should be up-to-date with the latest fashion trends in hair styling, etc. You must have a lot of patience and ability to work long hours, especially during the wedding or festive season. You must have a knack of making your customer feel good and special.

Those opting for the Degree Program, naturally would need a lot of P.R. convincing and decision making skills.

 

Is there a future in this field?
There are tremendous opportunities in the field, as more and more women now frequent Beauty Parlours, especially during the festive season or during the wedding season.

 

Where to Begin
in Goa

After the X standard join the ITI Institute – One-year Program in Hair and Skin care. This is at Government Training Centre and both the ITI Institutes in Margao and Mapusa have these programs.

Employment avenues
Beauty and hair care professionals can find employment in a saloon / beauty parlour, in a cosmetics manufacturing company, in a health club or gym, in television or films or self-employment (Run your own hair salon).

 

Monies
So though your monthly salary may be just Rs.3,500 – Rs.5,000 / -pm. you make more than twice of that in tips. But once you grow in experience and confidence – and more importantly clients recommend you through word of mouth – you are then talking of raking in between Rs.10,000 / – to Rs.15,000 / – p.m. And if you then decide to go it alone then you make even more.

 

Please do not be satisfied with just acquiring a Degree/Diploma – try and enhance your CV by doing online learning programs (with a certificate) of programs relevant to your choice of career. Your chances of employment will be much better than just a plain degree/diploma.
