Customs Officer

The air intelligence wing of the of Customs have caught several Gold Smugglers in Goa. At one time they seized 9.440 kg gold worth Rs 2.65 crore which was being smuggled by a lady through the Airport. The officials detained the passenger on suspicion and on searching her belongings found the smuggled gold. A similar incident occurred at the Airport where they apprehended another person for attempting to smuggle gold with 7.705 kg of gold, valued at around Rs 2.15 crore.

 

What is the Job all about?
Customs and central excise departments are part of the Directorate of revenue intelligence, directorate of anti evasion, directorate of training etc.

Customs Department is one of the two main tax collecting departments of the government whose function is divided into two broad areas:
The control of imported and exported goods for the purpose of duty, statistics and checks for entry of prohibited and restricted goods, especially smuggled drugs. The customs officer ensures that smuggling does not take place.

 

Can I go for it?

Two categories of customs and central excise department are:

Checking of incoming / outgoing people / ships / cargo for compliance is the work of custom officials. For detecting concealment of goods, monitoring trade, movement, marketing of goods.

The customs and central excise department has two wings
a. prevention and b. appraisal
that work under the rank of Assistant Commissioner respectively.

 

Is there a future in this field ?
The promotions are based on seniority as is usual the case in Government Departments. So yes, the job is secure and has a good future in terms of promotions.

 

Where do I start?

After Graduation:
To become a Customs Officer you will have to take the Civil Services Examination which provides entry into 27 different services including the Indian Customs & Central Excise Services.

A Bachelor’s degree is the basic qualification with 55% . A custom officer who is working under the Government of India should be above 19 yrs . The admit cards are sent out based on the merit achieved at graduation level. The notifications are published in the Employment News( Govt. newspaper) and other prominent periodicals.

Other requirements :
Indian citizenship,
Must possess a Vehicle license,
Ability to work flexible schedules,
Must pass an extensive background check,
Must be able to successfully complete all training required for the desired position,
Must be able to activate a radio or telephone equipment and console monitors.
Display an aptitude to cooperate genially and communicate with the community

 

What is the Test all about?
To prepare for the Union Public Service Commission exams, the candidate needs to be aware of all the current affairs. His / her General Awareness must be good. The aspirants should have good knowledge in English, G.K, and basic Mathematics etc as the entire exam is based on these subjects and followed by the interview.

Preventive Officers / Inspectors
For selecting candidates to this post Staff Selection commission holds an examination. Candidates face an interview board after qualifying in the test. Graduation is minimum qualification required for this post. Minimum 157.5 cms height and chest 81 cms is required. 30 minutes are given to candidates to cycle 8 kms and 15 minutes to walk 1600 meters. Tax assistants and stenographer are promoted to the post of inspectors which comprises of twenty five percent of the total posts.

Through UPSC
Posted as senior superintendents, Officers of customs and central excise services are appointed through UPSC examination.

Appraisers in customs are those who missed the examination by few marks.
State Public Service Commission Allied Services Examination gives state level jobs in customs and Excise.

Direct selection
Constables and Customs Preventive Officers and Central Excise Inspectors / Constables are the two stages where direct recruitment takes place. Employment Exchange sponsors the names for the vacancies for the posts of Constables.

Selection
It is done by the Staff Selection Commission (S.S.C). This is done every year (April).
The following positions are selected by the SSC.

1. Inspectors of Central Excise
2. Examiner (Ordinary Grade) in Custom House at Mumbai, Calcutta, Goa, Cochin, etc
3. Preventive Officer in Customs House as above.

Eligibility: Age – Above 18 and below 25.

Must be a graduate

Test : Written Test in GK,English, Arithmetical Ability and General Awareness

 

Monies:
UPSC Officers get between Rs.15,600/- to Rs.25,800/- p.m. plus TA/DA & other facilities.
