What is the job all about?
Gone are the days when Doctors used to handle all matters in a Hospital, i.e. Medical care as also running the Administrative aspects of the Hospital. Health care is nowadays being handled by professionally trained Managers, in terms of allotment of Hospital Rooms, Purchasing Equipment, Arranging Manpower, and dealing with Financial Aspects of the Hospital, so the Doctors are left to provide Professional Medical care.

The (MHA (Hospital) programme prepares students for leadership roles in the hospital sector through training in planning, operational and project management of hospitals including orientation in the managerial aspects of clinical and support services departments. The programme also imparts training in managing financial, material and human resources as well as planning and managing information systems in hospital settings.

Students of the MHA (Hospital) programme find jobs to manage a variety of specialised services in hospitals — both in the private and government sectors. Their job description includes managing various departments of large hospitals as well as planning and designing new services and new hospitals. In the past, students have found employment in leading corporate- and trust-run hospitals all over the country. Of late, there are also job opportunities arising in hospital consultancy firms, IT industry, and health insurance sector.

 

Can I go for it?
The two-year full time Master’s degree in Hospital & Healthcare Management with electives in Pharmaceutical management, Healthcare IT and Healthcare Insurance focuses on equipping students with the knowledge and skills required for the management of healthcare organizations. Be it Hospitals, Pharmaceuticals, IT, Insurance, Clinical research, Equipment, Manufacturing, Public healthcare establishment, Consultancies, NGOs, Wellness industry and others as may evolve. The programme aims at adopting a synergistic blend of academic knowledge and practical intricacies of the field to create professionals adept at identifying practical problems and using time tested and emerging managerial techniques to arrive at the most appropriate solutions.

Graduate of a Statutory University with 50% marks (45% for SC/ST) at graduation level. Candidates passing degree examination by part-time / correspondence / external course / distance learning or in one sitting are not eligible. Note: Candidates appearing for Final year bachelor’s degree examinations may apply but their admission will be subject to obtaining a minimum of 50% marks (45% for SC/ST).

You must have good PR & Communication skills. Compassion, Understanding and strong Administrative and Financial abilities. It is preferable to have some Medical background, so you could be able to better assess the problems on hand in terms of manpower, medical assistance, etc.

 

What is the future in this area?
Thanks to the boom in private healthcare, Management of Hospitals is now handled by professional managers. Modern day healthcare is provided in, what you could term as 5 star environment. The scope for talented Hospitality Managers is very good indeed.

Where to study?

In Goa:
Candidates should have a (i) Successfully completed three years Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline, or (ii) Four years Bachelor’s Degree in medicine, Paramedical Sciences, or other four years programme like Pharmacy, Veterinary Sciences, Engineering.

 

Outside Goa:

Employment Avenues:
All major Hospitals are looking for strong and capable Hospitality or Healthcare professionals.If you choose a career in healthcare management, your first job might be an entry- to mid-level management position in a specialized area, such as:

  • Finance
  • Government relations
  • Human resources
  • Information systems
  • Marketing and public affairs
  • Material management (purchasing of equipment and supplies)
  • Medical staff relations
  • Nursing administration
  • Patient care services
  • Planning and development

 

Monies:
Entry-level salary for a customer-care executive would be around Rs 20,000/- a month. This would soon go much higher, as you assume bigger responsibilities and deliver. And at senior levels, an executive could draw around Rs. 1 – 2 lakhs p.m.

 

Please do not be satisfied with just acquiring a Degree/Diploma – try and enhance your CV by doing online learning programs (with a certificate) of programs relevant to your choice of career. Your chances of employment will be much better than just a plain degree/diploma.
