Shubi Husain is a renowned celebrity nutritionist, diet, fitness and weight loss consultant based in Delhi. A Bachelors in Food and Nutrition and post graduate from Lady Irwin College (Delhi University) in the field of Dietetics and Nutrition, Ms Husain is recognized for her research work in the field of Obesity Management with particular emphasis in developing new and effective ways to combat Obesity.

The B.Sc. program – gives a good foundation in social sciences; economic issues including home economics, family and community resources, elements of biological sciences, such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Bacteriology, Human Physiology, Food and Nutrition (including Community Nutrition), Textile and Clothing, Child Development, Consumer Economics, Arts and Crafts, Consumer Education, etc.

Where to Begin

in Goa:
To graduate in Home Science apply to the Home Science College in Panaji. After 10+2 in Science, Arts or Commerce www.goahomescience.gov.in. There is an Entrance Aptitude Test. The College offers special attention in Food, Nutrition & Dietetics

 

Outside Goa:
There are also reputed Institutions in Mumbai, Pune and Bengaluru that conduct both the B.Sc. as well as the M.Sc. program.

Mumbai University also has a Master’s and Ph.D. program. The Ph.D. course can be completed in three to four years.

 

Employment avenues:
Many career opportunities exist in varied fields:

Community and social work in NGOs, organizations and other Agencies.
Food and nutrition related activities in hospitals / food services.
Teaching profession (Bachelors Degree in Home Science isa recognized qualification for a primary school teacher).
Dress making or textile designing or production unit of food industry or hotels are the best options to choose from.
Research Assistants at initial level, Food Analysts / Scientists, etc. There are research jobs that comprise educating specific sections of the population like farmers, villagers, etc. on a number of issues related to them.
Nutritionist / Dieticians.

Food Preservation, Specialized Cooking, etc. for Hospitals and Hotels. The food industry spends a huge budget, educating specific segments of the population such as mothers, farmers and villagers, on the food value of certain food items (baby foods).

 

Money
As in most jobs, the start is difficult, in terms of both jobs and salaries. So you must persevere and then things begin to happen. Initially, the salary could be at Graduate level ranging from Rs.7500/- to Rs.10,000/- p.m. But thereafter, this goes up to in excess of Rs.15,000/- p.m., based on your qualifications and your own individual talents and skills, both theoretical and practical.

 

Please do not be satisfied with just acquiring a Degree/Diploma – try and enhance your CV by doing online learning programs (with a certificate) of programs relevant to your choice of career. Your chances of employment will be much better than just a plain degree/diploma.
