What is the job all about?
Teaching students at College (Graduate) / University i.e. Post Graduate level is done by Lecturers. Readers and Professors. Teaching students at this level is a big challenge – more so, in Institutions of excellence (IIM’s and IIT’)
The teachers must go way beyond text-books and invite healthy discourse/discussion so as to promote fresh thinking and wider areas of Research.
Selection to these Institutions is based usually on both academic qualifications and actual work / research experience in the relevant field of specialization.
There are three levels of Lecturer:
Lecturer
Senior Lecturer
Lecturer (selection Grade)
Must have a Masters degree with at-least 55% in the relevant subject
After 8 years service you are then eligible for the position of Senior Lecturer. The person must take part in two Refresher courses of approved duration or in an equivalent activity of continuing education. Program. The performance as Lecturer should also be consistently good in terms of the Annual Appraisal Reports.
If you do not have aPh.D but fulfil other criteria with a good record,you are eligible for the Selection Grade.There are ways to become a Reader.
Readers must either have a Ph. D and have published work to his /her credit. Or three years in Research OR get to be a Reader after 8 years as a Lecturer in the Senior scale and obtained a Ph. D degree or an equivalent published work and made some mark in the area of scholarship and research by way of publications of Research papers or contribution to educational innovation etc.
Professor : You are selected as a Professor after 10 years of experience in post graduate teaching and or Research at the University or National Level Institutions.
Can you go for it?
The person has to be able to command the respect of the students so that the student could assimilate knowledge in a way that makes his/her life a productive experience.
The person has to be well read with a strong command of language and be able to keep the students attention so that the student do not create
a disturbance and at the same time enjoy learning – and is free to ask and discuss issues in class. Now-a-days use of Computer presentations are very popular and so are Group Discussion formats.
Finally the person must be very Research oriented so as to be able to present Papers at important Seminars with new ideas and innovative thinking to broaden the horizon of Human endeavour.
Is there a future in this field?
There is a great need for quality teachers as Educational Institutions are multiplying rapidly in the country.So there are tremendous prospects for people with passion and zeal to teach.
Where to Begin:
In Goa:
You could pursue your Master’s degree at the University of Goa or some colleges also offer a Master’s degree e.g. St Xavier’s College Mapusa.
The SET Examination is conducted by Go University in Humanities (including Languages, Social Sciences, Forensic Science, Environmental Sciences, Computer Sciences and Applications and Electronic Science.
After your Masters you need to Pass the NET / SET examinations to qualify to teach in College and Universities. NET = National Eligibility Test – for teaching anywhere in the country.
SET = State Eligibility Test for teaching at the State level.
Outside Goa
The Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) conducts the UGC-CSIR NET for other science subjects – namely Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Earth Atmosphere, Ocean & Planetary Sciences jointly with UGC.
Employment Avenues:
Colleges / Universities need qualified staff all the time.
Monies:
Government run Colleges / Universities now pay handsome salaries to all teaching staff –especially after the 7th Pay Commission results are implemented.
Please do not be satisfied with just acquiring a Degree/Diploma – try and enhance your CV by doing online learning programs (with a certificate) of programs relevant to your choice of career. Your chances of employment will be much better than just a plain degree/diploma.
