IKON

Devi Prasad Shetty is a distinguished Indian cardiac surgeon and the chairman and founder of Narayana Health, a chain of 21 medical centers across India. After earning his medical degree and completing post-graduate work in General Surgery, he trained in cardiac surgery in the United Kingdom.

In 1992, Dr. Shetty performed the first successful neonatal heart surgery in India on a 9-day-old baby named Ronnie. He also operated on Mother Teresa after she suffered a heart attack and subsequently served as her personal physician. Later, he moved to Bangalore, where he founded the Manipal Heart Foundation.

Over his illustrious career, Dr. Shetty has performed over 15,000 heart surgeries. His contributions to medicine have earned him the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan awards. Narayana Health’s flagship heart hospital in Bangalore is the largest in the world, with 1,000 beds and an average of 30 major heart surgeries performed daily.

What is the Job all about?

The medical profession is highly service-driven, offering significant returns but demanding rigorous work and long hours. A career in medicine requires continuous effort and learning beyond the 5½ years of earning an MBBS degree. The next steps typically involve pursuing an MD (Master of Medicine) or MS (Master of Surgery), which requires an additional 2 to 3 years of study. Alternatively, one can opt for a Diploma, which takes 2 years.

In the Diploma program, there are around 30 courses available, while the Degree program offers 38 subjects. Gaining admission to these programs is challenging due to the limited number of seats and the high level of competition. For example, in Nephrology, there are only 23 seats available nationwide, making entrance exams extremely competitive.

3. AYURVEDA

What is the Job all about?

A Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) is a 5½-year program, which includes a one-year internship. Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine, views life as a harmonious blend of the senses, mind, body, and soul. According to Ayurvedic principles, disease arises when the natural balance between humans and nature is disrupted. The core of Ayurveda is to restore this balance using natural remedies and practices.

Ayurveda emphasizes the idea that “prevention is better than cure.” This approach involves not only treating ailments but also taking preventive measures to avoid recurrence. Ayurvedic treatments often utilize natural herbs, minerals, purification techniques, detoxification, dietary changes, and body massages to promote overall health and wellness.
