Perhaps a little background will encourage you to consider very senior jobs in the Police Force. Did you know that we have had two Goans who enjoyed very senior positions in the Police Force? Julio Rebello (Super Cop) and John Lobo. In fact Mr. Rebello went on to become the Ambassador of our country and Mr. Lobo was detailed to ensure the safety to then Prime Minister Mr. Moraji Desai. Both were IPS Officers (Indian Police Force equivalent to IAS & IFS cadre) .

 

What is the job all about?
For the IPS (Indian Police Service) job – you have to be tough and at the same time compassionate, when the situation demands compassion. Quick decisions sometimes have to be taken in very delicate and complicated situations; so you have to guard against favoritism, political ideologies, etc.

 

Inspector General of Police Route (IPS)
During the probation period, you will undergo a year’s on-the-job training in the office of a Superintendent of Police of a district in the State where you have been allocated. On completing of your two-year probation, you will be confirmed as a three star Assistant Superintendent of Police (A.S.P.). Like this, promotions go on to Deputy Inspector General of a Range (group of districts).

In cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore, the law and order duties are the exclusive responsibility of the police force. In these cities, the ASP, SP and the DIG are called Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) and Commissioner of Police (CP).

The senior posts in the IPS are those of the Deputy Inspector General, Inspector General, Additional D.G. and Director General. There is only one Director General of Police (DG), who heads the police force of the State.

IPS cadre (All India) hold ranks of Director General of Police, IGP, Dy IGP etc
If you pass the State Police Service Exam you can become Dy. Supdt of Police (DSP)
If you are graduate (any branch) you can join as a Asst. Inspector of Police and later on promotion you can become an Inspector of Police.

 

There are various areas of responsibility:
CID ( Criminal Investigation Department ): CID perform special intelligence functions and has political, labour, youth & student, communal administrative and miscellaneous wings.

The Crime Branch investigates important cases that need scientific and specialised aid. The services of a scientific aids unit, a dog squad and a research unit. The Dog Unit is used for tracing narcotics and explosives and tracking criminals.

The Anti-Corruption Branch tackles the cases of corruption. The Anti-Narcotics Cell controls the spread of narcotics in Goa.

Security Unit takes care of VIP’.

Motor Transport Section deals with procurement, maintenance, overhauling and servicing of all vehicles. Traffic Cell manages the flow and control of traffic in Goa. There is a Traffic Education Cell which takes care of the traffic related education.

Women Police Station. This is a notified independent Police Station located at old GMC complex and manned by lady staff under supervision of DYSP Crime, set up exclusively to deal with crimes against women and other cases involving women.

Can I go for it?
Graduates can try for the IPS Cadre. Or if you are not very ambitious then as a graduate you apply for jobs as Sub-Inspector, Inspector of Police

Birth Certificate, Educational Qualification Certificate, 15 years Residence Certificate, Caste Certificate etc. and those fulfilling all requirements, will be put to Physical Measurements, plus language requirements as follows:
Essential (For Male candidate)

1. (a) Minimum height of 171 cms.
(b) Minimum height of 167 cms. For Departmental candidates.
2. Chest: Unexpanded – 80 cms. and expanded – 85 cms.
3. Should undergo Physical Efficiency Test which will carry no marks but with qualify for further tests, as follows:
4. i. 100 metres Run in 15 seconds
ii. Long jump – 3.80 metres
iii. Shot Put (7.26 Kgs. – 5.60 metres )
iv. High jump – 1.20 metres
v. 800 metres run in 2.50 minutes
5. Should pass written and oral examination conducted by the Police Department.
6. Knowledge of Konkani

Essential (For Female candidate)
1. Degree of a recognized university or equivalent.
2. Minimum height of 160 cms.
3. Weight not less than 45 kgs.
4. Should undergo Physical Efficiency Test which will carry no marks but will be qualifying for further tests, as follows:-
5. i. 100 metres run in 16.5 seconds
ii. Long Jump – 3.25 metres
iii. High Jump – 1.05 metres
iv. Shot Put (4 kgs. – 4.50 metres)
v. 200 metres run in 36.0 seconds
6. Should pass written and oral examination conducted by the Police Department.
7. Knowledge of Konkani

Desirable : Knowledge of Marathi

 

Eligibility for Sportsperson
Persons who have represented a State or the Country in the National or International competition in any of the Games/Sports listed below.

Persons who have represented their University in the Inter-University Tournaments conducted by the Inter-University Sports Board in any of these Games.

Persons who have represented the State School Teams in the National Sports/Games conducted by the All India School Games Federation in any of these Games/Sports.

Persons who have been awarded National Awards in Physical Efficiency under National Physical Efficiency Drive.

Candidates who qualify in the Physical Efficiency Test will be subjected to Written Examination. Written Examination shall consist of (i) General Knowledge – 25 marks (ii) General English – 25 marks (iii) Maths – 20 marks and (iv) Essay – 15 marks. Minimum passing marks in the Written Examination shall be 35%. There is good scope for growth in the Police Force. Graduates start as Sub-Inspectors of Police and then go on to become Inspectors of Police, Deputy Superintendent of Police and Superintendent of Police.

The other route is to try for the All India Competitive Exam after Graduation, and if selected you are then an IPS Officer and your prospects are much brighter. You become Additional Commissioner of Police, Jt. Commissioner of Police, Commissioner of Police and Inspector general of Police (IGP)

Basic Pay: Rs 90,000
D.A : Rs 96,300
HRA: Rs 27,000

Police Sub-Inspector Pay scale: Rs.9300-34800 and Grade Pay 4200/- in Goa.

Deputy Commissioner of Police 15,600-39,100 plus grade Pay of 8700
