Dr. Salim Abdul Ali, often referred to as the “Birdman of India,” was a distinguished ornithologist and naturalist, renowned for being one of the first Indians to conduct systematic bird surveys across the country. In Goa, the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, located on the island of Chorao along the Mandovi River, is named in his honor. This sanctuary features an estuarine mangrove habitat that hosts a diverse range of bird species, including both migratory and resident birds, contributing to Goa’s impressive variety of 473 bird species.
What is the job all about?
Zoology is the scientific study of the animal kingdom, encompassing everything related to animals and birds. It involves the classification of every animal on Earth. Zoologists often specialize in one of several narrower fields, including:
• Ornithology: The study of birds.
• Arachnology: The study of spiders.
• Cetology: The study of whales and dolphins.
• Ichthyology: The study of fish.
• Herpetology: The study of reptiles and amphibians, such as snakes.
Zoologists study the behavior, physiology, classification, and distribution of animals, whether living or extinct. Some research new vermin control drugs or veterinary medicines for pharmaceutical companies, while others work as museum curators, managing specimens, conducting research, and educating the public. Many zoologists are faculty members at colleges and universities, where they engage in research and teach students.
Zoologists observe animals in both laboratory settings and natural habitats, studying their origins, development, habits, behaviors, and interactions. They also research the development of animal diseases, contributing significantly to our understanding of the animal kingdom, which is a branch of biology. Zoology is a broad field offering many research career opportunities, particularly because there is still much to learn. A career in zoology also allows for meaningful contributions to ecology through conservation work. Most zoologists are employed by colleges and universities.
Can I go for it?
Do you love animals? Do you have the patience to observe them in their natural habitats, sometimes in remote locations and varied environments? Zoologists often engage in conservation efforts, protecting endangered animals, birds, and their habitats. If these aspects of the job appeal to you, then a career in zoology could be a great fit.
Is there a future in this field?
There is global concern over the loss of many animal and bird species due to poaching and habitat destruction. Consequently, there is significant demand for efforts to conserve endangered species, such as the white tiger and panda. Students planning careers as field biologists need strong mathematical skills and should be comfortable working with computers. Perseverance, curiosity, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently are essential traits for success in this field.
Where do I start?
In Goa:
Carmel College, Dhempe College, Chowgule College, and the Government College of Arts, Science & Commerce in Sanquelim offer a 3-year degree program in Zoology. To pursue this, you should choose Zoology as your subject from the 11th grade onwards and then proceed to complete your B.Sc. in Zoology.
After Graduation?
Goa University offers an M.Sc. in Zoology, and you can then pursue a Ph.D. at Goa University or at the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO).
Employment Avenues
• Zoologists can find jobs with agencies such as NIO Goa, ICAR, non-profit organizations, universities, and zoos.
• A bachelor’s degree in zoology is the minimum requirement for entry-level positions, while advanced qualifications are typically necessary for higher-level research roles.
