Salim Abdul Ali is a well known ornithologist (Bird expert) and naturalist. Sometimes referred to as the “birdman of India”, Salim Ali was among the first Indians to conduct systematic bird surveys across India.
In Goa we have the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary – an estuarine mangrove habitat, which is located of the Island of Chorao along the Mandovi River.Here we see a wide variety of Birds both migratory birds and those whose Habitat is Goa.
What is the job all about?
Zoology deals with the animal kingdom. It’s the scientific study of everything to do with animals and birds. Zoology covers the classification of every animal on earth.
Zoologists specialize in one of a variety of much narrower sciences including such fields as Ornithology (study of birds) Arachnology (the study of spiders), Cetology (whales and dolphins), Ichthyology (fish), Herpetology (snakes) Ornithology (birds) .
Zoologists study the behaviour, physiology, classification and distribution of animals, whether they are living or extinct. Other zoologists research new vermin control drugs or veterinary medicines for pharmaceutical companies. Some work as museum curators, where they manage specimens, conduct research, and educate the public. Others are faculty members in Colleges and Universities.
Zoologists are life scientists who study animals, observing them in the laboratory and in their natural habitat. They study the origin and development of species as well as their habits, behaviors and interactions. Zoologists, who also research the development of animal diseases, sometimes known as animal scientists or animal biologists because zoology is the branch of biology that deals with the animal kingdom. Zoology is a wide field offering many career opportunities for research, especially because there still is a great deal to learn about it. A career in zoology offers an opportunity to make a difference to the planet’s ecology through conservation work. Most zoologists are employed by colleges and universities, where they engage in research and teach students.
Can I go for it?
Do you love animals? Do you have tons of patience as,observing animals in their natural habitat and variety of locations & environments can be a time consuming process, Zoologists can also be involved in conservation, protecting endangered animals and their habitats.So if you have your thumbs up for all or any of these studies then you could certainly go for it.
Is there a future in this field?
There is a world wide clamour that we are losing many of animal species –due to either poaching or insensitive methods of destroying these animals. So yes there is a big future here as there is huge effort to make sure we do not totally lose there’s endangered species e.g. the white tiger.
Students planning careers as field biologists need strong mathematical skills and should like working with computers. Perseverance, curiosity and the ability to concentrate on details and work independently are essential.
Where do I start?
In Goa:
Carmel College, Dhempe College, Chowgule College, Govt College of Arts, Science & Commerce Sanquelim have a 3 year degree Program in Zoology
You need to take Zoology as you subject from 11th onwards and proceed to do your Bsc in Zoology .
After Graduation
Goa University offers an M.Sc. in Zoology and you could then proceed with M.Sc. at Goa University and then do your Ph.D. in Goa University or if you are keen then do your Ph.D. in NIO.
Employment Avenues
Zoologists find jobs working for agencies such as NIO – Goa, ICAR, non-profit organizations, universities, zoos. A bachelor’s degree in zoology is a minimum requirement for entry level jobs while further qualifications are usually required for higher level research jobs.
Monies
As always starts are difficult –but once experienced enough then money keeps rolling in.
Please do not be satisfied with just acquiring a Degree/Diploma – try and enhance your CV by doing online learning programs (with a certificate) of programs relevant to your choice of career. Your chances of employment will be much better than just a plain degree/diploma.
